‘Balut’ is the worst food in SEA, says global survey

Filipinos have their personal picks when it comes to local dishes. But two of the country’s common faves Lumpiang Shanghai and Tortang Talong both took the highest spot at the best-rated Southeast Asian food ranking of international food website Taste Atlas.

On Facebook, Taste Atlast posted a photo showing the list of some of the well-known dishes within SEA. Lumpiang Shanghai and Tortang Talong both landed a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. The two Pinoy food was followed by Indonesia’s Bubur Ayam, which received a 4.7 rating.

Taste Atlas said Lumpiang Shanghai was “the most popular variety of lumpia, the crispy deep-fried Filipino snack that evolved from Chinese spring rolls.” It added that the crispy snack is usually served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce – which is on point.

Tortang Talong was described as “a simple Filipino dish made with a combination of roasted eggplants and lightly beaten eggs.” It can be also be enjoyed at any time of day as breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Meanwhile, another Filipino exotic food was also included on the list, but it ranked as the worst. Balut had a low 2.7 rating, together with Indonesia’s Acar (3.2 rating), and Cambodia’s Steamed Curried Fish (3.3 rating).

On Taste Atlas, it says Balut is served from street stalls to high-end restaurants. The unusual delicacy is a duck egg that has been hard-boiled, fertilized, and incubated. Then the cooked embryo is traditionally consumed straight from the shell.

In the latter part of the post, TasteAtlas clarified that the rating is based on its audience. Back in August 2021, the country’s Sinigang took the top spot as the best-rated vegetable soup in the world with a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars.
