Kiko Pangilinan is the most searched VP candidate on Google

Earlier this month, Vice President Leni Robredo was the top presidential candidate on Google Trends’ election page. When it comes to the most-searched Philippine vice presidential bet, her running mate, Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan went past Sara Duterte on Monday.

In the tech giant’s recent results, Pangilinan has now earned a 41% share of searches, followed by Duterte with 33%, Walden Bello with 13%, Senate President Tito Soto with 8%, and Rizalito David with 5%.

‘Google Trends Philippine Elections’ was made as a tool for the media to find data for stories related to the running candidates, according to a press statement.

Under the ‘Explore’ option, it revealed the locations where Pangilinan was the most popular during the specified time frame. It also showed that his corresponding search topics and queries were mostly about his stand on the Rice Tarrification Law, and YouTuber Janina Vela, who was one of the hosts during the #PasigLaban rally.

Other searchers were related to Hannah and Donny Pangilinan, who are the senator’s niece and nephew, respectively. The topics followed after Pangilinan’s appearance during the recent COMELEC debate, and the Leni-Kiko campaign in Pasig City, which both took place on March 20.

Meanwhile, Google Trends’ results show that presidential aspirant Robredo is still leading, and went three points higher at 48%, followed by Bongbong Marcos Jr. with 28%, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno with 11%, Sen. Manny Pacquiao with 9%, and Sen. Panfilo Lacson with 4%.

Google stressed how the page is “not a poll or survey and does not reflect voting intentions.” A rise in a specific search query does not hint that a candidate is somehow “popular” or “winning”.

While the Marcos-Duterte tandem is still leading the recent Publicus Asia survey, political analyst Andrew Masigan explained Google Trends predicts election results through the online behavior of the voting public over a period of time.

Pangilinan gained fame as a legal commentator in various mass media programs even before his election to the Senate in 2001 and marriage to actress Sharon Cuneta in 1996. He has also served three terms as senator, which was shortly interrupted by his appointment as food security czar from 2014 to 2015.

VP Leni’s running mate was also one of two senators who voted against the passage of the controversial Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020. For the upcoming elections, he is pushing for providing food security, managing the pandemic, and addressing corruption.
