Microsoft and DepEd launched a ‘Minecraft’ mobile game for PH students

All those video call-based online classes may seem tedious sometimes, so maybe this is something new that students can look forward to. The Department of Education (DepEd) recently partnered with Microsoft and had a pilot launch of the Minecraft: Education Edition mobile version, which is exclusively released in the Philippines.

Given that there are around 84 million smartphone users in the country, Microsoft aims to provide access to game-based learning to more students. The tech company’s press release explained that the game-based learning platform will provide 23 million Filipino students early access to an expanded learning experience in school, at home, or in any remote learning environment.

Minecraft: Education Edition is also designed for learners of all learning styles and grade levels. It offers over 300 Minecraft worlds to explore and over 600 standards-aligned lessons to engage students to learn more about history, languages, social and emotional learning, equity, and inclusion. It also covers STEM-focused areas like chemistry, coding, and more.

Since classes in the country have been held virtually for nearly two years,  public and private schools have been incorporating the game in their teaching instruction to stimulate the interest of students in learning more.

Apart from teachers in the country, other educators worldwide also use Minecraft: Education Edition to engage with their students in a more interactive and fun way. Teachers won’t have a hard time curating lesson plans with the tools available on the platform. The project-based lessons aim to help students develop “critical 21st-century skills”, which they can use in the future.

Minecraft: Education Edition‘s pilot release can now be downloaded through the Google Play Store. Students and teachers can also access it by signing in using their Microsoft 365 school accounts.
