What is ‘Awitin Mo At Isasayaw Ko’ in English, Duolingo asks

There are many throwback songs that your family may have played during reunions, and Awitin Mo, Isasayaw Ko by VST & Company might be part of it. The OPM song was recently used by language app Duolingo as a quest for Filipinos to translate the lyrics to English.

On TikTok, there’s a Duolingo Duet challenge, which encourages viewers to sing along to the English version of the disco song. Local celebrities and influencers like Kristel Fulgar and Elha Nympha have taken part. Below is the translated lyrics that you can try singing along to:

Sing our music
That’s our greatest composition
And I promise you
Whenever you will play that sound
I will be around

Oh oh oh
You sing our song
And I’ll swing to the beat
Ah ah ah
Oh oh oh
However long
Love’s a two-way street
Yeah yeah yeah

Alternatively, here are OG lyrics in Filipino:

Awit natin
Ay wag na wag mong kalimutan
Pangako ko naman
Na lagi kang pakikinggan
Magpakailanman

Ah-ha-ha, awitin mo
At isasayaw ko, oh-ho-ho
Ah-ha-ha, awitin mo
At isasayaw ko
Ah-ha-ha-ha-haaa

Awitin Mo, Isasayaw Ko catapulted VST & Company into popularity in 1978. Following its release, the song was included in films like Disco Fever, which starred Vilma Santos and Christopher de Leon. In 1999, Fernando Poe, Jr. sang it with Judy Ann Santos in their movie Isusumbong Kita sa Tatay Ko. Many local artists also sang renditions of the track.

The singing challenge is in line with the app’s introduction of its latest course English for the Tagalog Speakers through Duolingo Duet. According to Duolingo’s Marketing Director Haina Xiang, the Philippines is showing a “strong interest” in learning languages. She added, ‘The Filipinos’ peak time on the app is 9-10 PM, with 15min/ day average usage time.’

Xiang added that Filipinos are also eager on learning man-made languages such as Klingon and High Valyrian. Aside from those, other popular languages include Japanese and Korean. She said, ‘The appetite for learning is growing. Duolingo wants to share the fun by making free language learning more accessible for Filipinos.’
