Finally, Twitter is testing an ‘edit’ button

Twitter has released features like safety mode and keyword search. Both updates are convenient but users have been requesting an ‘edit’ button for years — and the platform finally announced that it’s testing the function.

Tesla CEO and Twitter’s largest stakeholder, Elon Musk, posted a tweet on April 5 asking his followers if they wanted the edit option. It showed that 76.6% voted yes and 26.4% disagreed. His tweet garnered over four million votes, as of writing.

The following day, Twitter Comms’ official account revealed that they are actually working on the much-awaited button. Some users speculated it was because of Musk’s post. The tweet read, ‘Yes, we’ve been working on an edit feature since last year! No, we didn’t get the idea from a poll.’

The mock-up of the edit feature will be initially tested with Twitter Blue subscribers “in the coming months.” While others welcome the option to correct typos without having to delete the tweet, others are concerned that it could lead to altered texts that could spread misinformation.

In a separate thread, Twitter’s head of consumer product Jay Sullivan explained that the company would be “actively seeking input and adversarial thinking” before a worldwide rollout to prevent potential misuse.

‘Without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, Edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation,’ he pointed out. ‘Protecting the integrity of that public conversation is our top priority when we approach this work.’
