Gamers, watch your words: Valorant will monitor your voice chats soon
Whether you’re a gamer or you just watch your friends play, you know that spitting out insults, threats, harassment, or offensive language is common when they engage. But Valorant players better be cautious of what they say since developer Riot Games will soon record in-game voice communications to “combat disruptive behavior.”
In a statement posted on its website, Valorant shared that it will begin recording players’ voice chats on July 13. It explained that the move will be a way to “collect clear evidence that could verify any violations of behavioral policies.”
The recording and evaluation will first be held in North America, where it will specifically focus on English-speaking Valorant players. The move won’t be used to assess player reports for now. The gathered information from the voice evaluation will be used to build “language models” for a beta launch rolling out later this year.
The statement clarified, ‘We know that before we can even think of expanding this tool, we’ll have to be confident it’s effective, and if mistakes happen, we have systems in place to make sure we can correct any false positives (or negatives for that matter).’
Riot added that the brand new tech will surely have “growing pains”, but it will lead to the guarantee of a “safer and more inclusive environment for everyone” who plays.
In the meantime, the only way to not be detected by Riot’s upcoming voice system is to disable voice chat or use another communication app like Discord. The developer also mentioned that they will be testing this on Valorant first, so it’s likely that their other games’ voice chats could soon be monitored as well.
