The Internet asks “Why only now?” after LTFRB condemns overcharged fares following Seventeen Joshua’s experience

Aju Nice! Thanks for sparking this action, Joshua!

We’re sincerely sorry you had to have a bad experience in Manila.

Along with K-pop boy group Seventeen’s successful Manila leg of Be The Sun during the weekend, the Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) released a statement regarding the excessive charging of public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers.

This was due to Seventeen’s member Joshua Hong opening up about his experience being overcharged by a taxi driver in a recent live when he was on vacation in Manila with his mom prior to their concert.  He shared that he was charged 1000 PHP by the taxi driver, which he later discovered was triple their actual fare.

In a statement released last October 8, the LTFRB took immediate action due to Joshua’s experience. The board announced that they condemn PUV drivers who overcharge their passengers.

The LTFRB urged citizens to report any instances of overcharging and warned that drivers caught doing so may be fined and have their public convenience certificates canceled.

Following the announcement, the Internet reacted to why the LTFRB waited for a K-pop idol to speak up about his experience when being overcharged by drivers is not an isolated case– both for foreigners and locals.

Fans also poked fun at the situation saying, “Joshua Hong you will always be famous.” implying that Joshua sparked the change.

Thankfully, Joshua said that he wasn’t saying Manila is a bad place to travel and was only sharing his experience. He even said that this is what happens when you have a trip unprepared.

The Seventeen sub-vocalist was supposed to go to Vietnam with his mom but due to mishaps, they couldn’t continue traveling to the country.

Joshua said he didn’t want to waste going on a vacation with his mom, so he opted to hastily book a flight to Manila.

Upon arrival, Joshua shared that he experienced a chain of misfortunes as a result of their spontaneous travel. He cited that he could not withdraw at the ATMs in the airport so he had no cash and was also surprised he could not pay using his card at the convenience store.

He urged fans to make plans in advance before trips to avoid similar misfortunes.
