The Internet’s Top 5 favorite scenes from ‘Maria Clara at Ibarra’

Why is it important to know our history?

This is a question posed by GMA’s newest historical serye ‘Maria Clara at Ibarra’.

In a time where the everyday Filipino’s personal lives and struggles are too heavy to even bother with getting to know our past, ‘Maria Clara at Ibarra’ aims to share the importance of learning the struggles of the Filipinos before us.

This is what Klay (Barbie Forteza), the Gen-Z Maria Clara is about to discover as she travels through time and somehow ends up within the pages of Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere. There she meets Crisostomo Ibarra (Dennis Trillo), Maria Clara (Julie Anne San Jose), and the rest of the characters penned by the national hero in this work.

Since its release on October 3, the Internet has been loving every episode and has been saying that it is about time a historical comedy based on Philippine literature is brought to the mainstream media.

If you still need persuading into watching the new series, here are 5 Maria Clara at Ibarra Internet favorite scenes.

  1. “Everyday, my life is a constant struggle here in our miserable country”

As the comedic relief character in the series, Klay opens up the story by giving the viewers a glimpse of her unfortunate reality, which gained the sympathy of the viewers.

After being told by her professor that she failed in his subject, Klay admits that it is because she doesn’t find the importance of his class to her chosen profession as a nurse. “Hindi ko kasi maintindihan kung pano makakatulong sa’kin imaging skillful sa pagde-dress ng wounds at as pagkakabit ng IVs sa isang pasyente like a pro ang pagbabasa ng Noli.” she says.

She then narrates that learning about the struggles of our ancestors was irrelevant to her as she experiences her own fair share of struggles daily with being an underpaid working student and seeing domestic abuse at home. “Kaya sa tingin niyo sir, ano pang pake-alam ko sa Noli, sa kasaysayan natin, sa struggles na sinasabi niyo? Eh every day, my life is a constant struggle here in this miserable country.”

2. Their powerful opening scene

To begin the series with a bang, the team did not hold back with their opening scene featuring Maria Clara. Screaming into the night and wishing to die was a very strong and commanding first scene that immediately hooks the audience.

3. Klay calling out misogyny, education, and class issues

After overhearing the conversation Crisostomo Ibarra had with his friends about education and why women did not deserve to study, Klay could not help but let the men see a piece of her mind.

Demeaning women, they said educated women who study at university may just be a pain. She marched over to their table and called them out saying everyone has the basic human right to education and informed them that the Philippines will have two female presidents. Period.

4. “Hanggang chapter 3 lang kasi nabasa ko”

Apart from the bra and underwear scene, Klay was again able to show her comedic side in a conversation with Crisostomo Ibarra. The Internet found it so camp when Klay responded to him saying “Ay hindi ko na din alam yan eh, hanggang chapter 3 lang kasi yung nabasa ko.”

5. Tinola

Another instance that showcased Klay’s colorful personality was during the dinner Crisostomo Ibarra had with Kapitan Tiago in chapter three of the novel. The Internet noted the smart insert of Klay in one of the key scenes of the novel. Klay was bewildered as she realized she was the one who served Padre Damaso the Tinola. “Nakakaloka ako pala yung nag-serve nun.” she says bewildered.

The ensemble was also very effective in their roles. Tirso Cruz III did a good job at expressing his disdain for only getting a wing part in his Tinola.

ICYDK: The Tinola in the scene symbolizes Ibarra’s true desire to be free of the Spanish reign. How one simple Filipino dish was preferred by Ibarra over Spanish cuisine is a premonition of what is to come.

Only in its opening week, the show had already garnered so much support and attention from the Internet due to the number of issues they have already tackled. Class struggle, education, and misogyny are topics they have already touched upon, and surely there is so much more in store as the story progresses.
