For her birthday, Taylor’s gift is her “Shake It Off” copyright lawsuit dropped

Happy 33rd birthday, Taylor!

Finally after five years, the lawsuit against Taylor Swift made by songwriters Nathan Butler and Sean Hall who claimed Taylor lifted lyrics to her hit ‘Shake It Off’ is over.

All the parties involved finally came to an agreement to “shake off” the case.

On Monday, songwriters Nathan Butler and Sean Hall decided to drop the lawsuit where they claimed Taylor Swift lifted lyrics to her 2014 smash hit from the 2001 Billboard charts song ‘Playas Gon’ Play‘ performed by the girl group 3LW which they wrote.

Taylor, together with the plaintiffs were scheduled to go to trial next month, Variety reports, but both Nathan and Sean asked the judge to dismiss this action in its entirety.

As of now, the exact terms of the settlement have not yet been disclosed or clarified. Swift, however, along with her original co-writers Max Martin and Shellback remain to be credited.

The legal battle began in 2017 when the pair claimed that Taylor allegedly lifted her lyrics “players gonna play play play play play” and “haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate” from the repeating lyrics of ‘Playas Gon’ Play‘ that go ‘Playas they gonna play’ and ‘haters they gonna hate’.

But, prior to receiving the complaint by the plaintiffs, Taylor said in a filing that she has never heard of the song mentioned. Taylor also claimed that she also was not aware of the song’s popularity as she wasn’t allowed by her parents to watch the MTV hit countdown show that apparently played this song at its peak.

Taylor and her legal team also argued that the similar phrasing of the lines stems from them being popular language and terms. “I recall hearing phrases about players play and haters hate stated together by other children while attending school in Wyomissing Hills, and in high school in Hendersonville.” Taylor said.

The phrase is so common that Swift even donned a shirt purchased from Urban Outfitters that read “haters gonna hate” at a 2013 concert.
