Why it really felt that the Grinch stole Christmas this year

Christmas wasn’t Christmas-ing so much this year

And it’s not only because we’re getting older.

Every year as soon as the ber-months begin in the Philippines, Christmas decorations and carols appear along with the colder breeze. These could be tell-tale signs the Holidays are coming. However, it has become quite common that people yearn for the days of Christmases past. Noting that the season was better and happier despite being simpler back in the day.

If you were one of the people that only felt Christmas settle in a few days before as you finish your last-minute gift shopping, be assured that you are not alone. The season is not for everybody and if the spirit is not upon you, then that really is ok.

There are also many factors that contribute to this, and it is not only because we grew up and stopped believing in Santa.

There are people that don’t have families to spend the holidays with.

May it be someone that just moved to a new city for a new job or someone that can’t fly home for the holidays, it is truly harder to feel the Christmas spirit when away from family. If you spent Christmas away from your loved ones this year, it surely wasn’t easy, but know that your sacrifice is greatly appreciated by them.

Some people were working during the holidays.

Frontliners like healthcare providers, food and hotel industry practitioners, pilots, flight crew, reporters, and even celebrities among others had to work during the holidays so that we all can have better ones. Surely, it didn’t take too much from our own celebrations not to be rude to them and somehow spread even a bit of the holiday cheer.

Everything is expensive (and yes, by that we mean onions too)

Whether your family or friend group decided to celebrate by eating dinner out, having a vacation, or just celebrating at home with home-cooked meals, the economy right now is not in the best state, and it’s definitely harder to feel the holiday spirit with little to no money.

Sure, some people would want to romanticize the situation by saying “it is not what you have or do during the season but who you spend it with” and there may be some truth to that but you at least have to admit if things so much as basic ingredients like onions were more accessible and affordable to most then that would be better. “Saan aabot ang 500 mo?” truly takes a whole different meaning now because newsflash, it won’t get you too far.

If you felt like the Grinch stole Christmas this year because you went through any of these, there is always the new year to look out and hope for. It’s also important to never lose sight of why we celebrate this holiday in the first place and that is to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
